ISSEY MIYAKE
Visionary Japanese designer Issey Miyake launched his namesake womenswear label in 1971. A fashion industry pioneer for nearly half a century, the brand roots its design philosophies in technical ingenuity, creative experimentation, and utilitarianism. Miyake’s dedication to innovation in design—especially textile engineering—can be seen in his groundbreaking pleating technique, debuting in the brand’s Pleats Please line in 1993. Current designer Satoshi Kondo upholds Miyake’s legacy of invention, blending traditional Japanese techniques and cutting-edge technologies to develop experimental 3D fabrics. Easy and casual shirts, jackets, and trousers are made avant-garde through subtly sculptural silhouettes, vibrant color-blocking, and the label’s signature pleats.
